Am 21. August veröffentlichen die Nashville-Rocker BULLY mit „SUGAREGG“ ihr drittes Album via Sub Pop. Das zwölf Tracks umfassende Album wurde von John Congleton und BULLY's Frontfrau Alicia Bognanno unter Mithilfe von Graham Walsh (HOLY FUCK, THE WIZARD) produziert und gemischt. Für den Recording Prozess haben sich BULLY in den legendären Pachyderm-Studios in Cannon Falls und dem Palace Sound in Toronto niedergelassen.
Mit „Where to Start" geben uns BULLY einen ersten Einblick in den Sound des Albums. Stereogum schreibt über die eingängigen Lead-Single: „The music behind her is a reminder of how much can be accomplished with two or three chords. It’s pretty much the platonic ideal of a rock song as a pop song, right down to its exactly three-minute runtime." Das durchgedrehte Musikvideo zum Song entstand unter der Regie von Alan Del Rio Ortiz und Bognanno.
Inspiriert wurde „Where to Start" übrigens von der britischen Anarcho-Pop-Punkband Chumbawumba bzw. deren 90er Novelty-Hit „Tubthumping", wie BULLY-Frontfrau Alicia Bognanno gegenüber dem US-Rolling Stone in einem Statement zugab. „I was listening to “Tubthumping” by Chumbawamba and picking apart the melodic structure and sort of trying to mimic that. I’m not even joking; it still makes me laugh to think about. But let’s be real, that is undeniably a solid song. ‘Where to Start’ addresses the frustration that comes along with love having the ability to fully control your mood and mental state for better or worse. It was therapeutic to funnel some lightheartedness into what can be an otherwise draining state of mind."
Ein altes Sprichwort besagt, dass uns niemand außer uns selbst retten kann. Das Erkennen und Loslösen von den altbekannten Mustern, ist ein notwendiger Prozess, um für Veränderung zu sorgen.
Dafür steht auch Alicia Bognanno von BULLY, deren Leben sich während des Schreibprozesses von „SUGAREGG“ komplett auf den Kopf gestellt hat. „There was change that needed to happen and it
happened on this record,” erklärt Bognanno. „Derailing my ego and insecurities allowed me to give these songs the attention they deserved.”
Bognanno erklärt, dass die Suche nach der richtigen Behandlung ihrer bipolaren Störung ihre Denkweise radikal verändert hat („Being able to finally navigate that opened the door for me to write
about it.”) Auch ein unerwarteter Ausflug in die Filmwelt brachte einige Inspirationen für „SUGAREGG“ mit sich. Bognanno wurde gebeten, Songs für den 2019er-Film „Her Smell“ mit Elisabeth Moss in
der Hauptrolle als Frontfrau der fiktiven Rockband SOMETHING SHE zu schreiben. „It got me motivated to play music again after the last album,” erläutert Bognanno „I loved reading the script and
trying to think, what music would the character write? People asked if I’d play those songs with BULLY but the whole point was for them to not be BULLY songs. It was nice to get my head out of my
own ass for a second and work on a project for someone else.”
Bognanno ist eine leidenschaftliche Toningenieurin. Die Produktion von „SUGAREGG“ gab sie erstmals aus der Hand und begab sich dafür in die abgelegenen Pachyderm-Studios in ihrer Heimatstadt
Cannon Falls, um dort mit dem Grammy-Preisträger John Congleton (ST. VINCENT, SLEATER-KINNEY, THE WAR ON DRUGS, MODEST MOUSE) zusammenzuarbeiten. An „SUGAREGG“ haben außerdem Tour-Drummer Wesley
Mitchell und Bassist Zach Dawes, der für seine Arbeit an den jüngsten Alben von SHARON VAN ETTEN und LANA DEL REY bekannt ist, mitgewirkt.
Letztlich ist „SUGAREGG“ ein Beleg dafür, dass durch tiefgreifende Veränderungen auch tiefgreifende Ergebnisse entstehen können – in diesem Fall die ausdrucksstärkste und kraftvollste Musik in
Bognannos Karriere. „This is me longing to see the bigger picture, motivated and eager for contentment in the best way. I hope the happy go lucky / fuck-it-all attitude shines through some of
these songs because I really did feel like I was reentering a place I hadn’t been to in a while and was excited to be back there.”
